I think that we should stop teaching Shakespeare because not everyone is a good reader, and lots of people can struggle reading stuff from 400 years ago because it is so different of what we have today. Another reason is that we should learn about newer stuff from other people that can help us to learn better and become better readers and writers. Shakespeare is also not very relatable because it was written so long ago. Students might also think that it is really boring and not pay attention. Students also won’t receive full world view of other authors from different places to see what they write like.
All that I know about William Shakespeare is that he was a guy from England a long time ago that wrote plays and stories. Last year we read some of his stories in English and learned about him, but I mostly forgot everything. I think we read The Tempest and The Merchant of Venice. I don’t really like his stories until I know what they mean. They are all really confusing and hard to understand, but once I know what they mean, I usually am okay with them. I feel like reading Shakespeare will make me a better reader overall.
What good is being able to grade your own work? I like to grade my own work because you can look back at it and see what you did wrong. I also like it because sometimes teachers have a lot of work to grade so it takes a while to get your work back and graded, but when you grade your own work, you can get it back almost instantly. It can help you in the future because you might need to self-assess your self in college or your career. Self-Assessment is a skill that you should have because it can help you now and in the future.
In term three I got a 4.0, but in term one and two I got a few B’s and A minus’s, so I could have worked on getting a 4.0 in term one and two. I want to get a 4.0 for term four, and I want to get a 4.0 every term at the high school. I want to get better at writing by the end of the school year. To get a 4.0 for term four, I am going to do all of my homework, turn stuff in on time, and pay attention is class. I think that I can get a 4.0 for this term if I follow these rules.
I think that this book was good, and I enjoyed it, but I didn’t like it at some parts because I didn’t really understand what they were saying because they talk different then people do now. I really liked the trial part and after the trial because I thought the trial was written really well and I could understand what was happening. I didn’t think I would like this book as much as I did. I like all of the quotes that Atticus says. I think I would rate this book 10/10 and would recommend it. You might think that it sounds like it won’t be good, but it is.
I chose the quote, “There are some men in this world who are born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your father’s one of them” This means that Atticus is helping Tom Robinson, and that is unpleasant because no one wants to defend a black man because racism was really severe back then, and everyone knew that the black person always lost and whoever was defending him would probably get a lot of hate. Atticus knew this, but he chose to do the right thing, and help Tom. He wants to do the right thing to set an example for his kids and because he knows it is the right thing to do.
I chose my dad as a person who is courageous and has integrity. If someone was asking him for help about a decision, this is what he would say. “You should always do the right thing, even if you are afraid to do it. Sometimes when people are afraid, they choose bad decisions, but even if you are afraid, you need to be courageous and have integrity. Sometimes if there is a big group and something bad is happening, lots of people don’t do anything about it because they are afraid, and they think that someone else is going to do something about it, but no one else will. Always do the right thing.”
I feel like Mr. Cunningham is not a good person because even though you are an honest person, and you take care of your kids even though you are poor, and always pay people back, you aren’t a good person if you are showing up to kill someone, and you are even worse of a person if the only reason you are doing it is because the guy is black. I get that Walter Cunningham might have just been influenced by the other men, but he still showed up to lynch Tom Robinson. To me that makes him a bad person.
Last class with the sub a lot of people were being loud and playing music instead of doing their work. A lot of people were not in their assigned seats either. People could have just been quiet and done their work. The sub was trying to get people to calm down and be quiet, but nobody would listen. I was just trying to get my work done but it was kind of distracting with all of the noise. The sub said she didn’t care if we were listening to music, but when it started getting really loud she asked us to turn it off, but no one turned it off.
Atticus’s definition of courage is when you know you are going to lose but you try anyways, and just because you have a gun doesn’t mean you have courage. My definition of courage is doing something you are scared of. Atticus is trying to tell Jem that just because he had a gun and shot the sick dog doesn’t mean that he is super courageous, but he is trying to teach Jem that courage comes from knowing you will lose but going and doing it anyways. Atticus is courageous for defending Tom Robinson even though he knows people will judge him.
