I think that this poem was a little harder to understand then are last poem “strange fruit” but I really liked it. I think this poem is really nice because it shows you some perspective from African Americans. They all had dreams as everyone does but back then they didn’t have the liberty to talk about it or share them with others. I think that because it was stressful or sad to not talk about them some finally just let go of their dreams. Others might not have let go of their dreams but keeping them in was very hard which is why in the poem it said, “Or does it explode?” I’m sure many of them were upset and this left them with anger. I think reading this poem was good for us because we need to understand that everyone should be able to follow their dreams without anyone stopping them.
I pick Mayella Ewell. She loves her dad so much and she wanted to protect him so she lied in court. Her father used to get drunk a lot so he probably did touch her and hurt her before. I don’t know how she still loves him so much after all that has happened with her father. If this were to ever happen to me I would feel unsafe around him and I would lose all my trust. I think that not only was she trying to protect her father but she also wanted to cover up the mistake she made. Atticus said “she is white. She knew full well the enormity of her offense, but because her desires were stronger than the code she was breaking, she persisted in breaking it.” She didn’t have friends because she had to do many chores at home and take care of her siblings. This is another reason why her desires got the best of her. She knew what would happen if anyone found out and because someone did find out she had to hide the evidence, Tom Robinson was her evidence in this case.
I’m honestly going a bit crazy. I haven’t seen my friends in such a long time! We all facetime each other and still text but it’s not the same. I haven’t left my house since school got canceled and it been pretty stressful. I have 4 sisters so of course there is lots of drama and we have been fighting so much. I mean I love them and all but I can’t handle being with them every single day hour after hour. At least school was a place where I could get away from them. Being stuck in my house kinda sucks but what makes it worst is the workload I have been getting from my teachers. I really hope we can go back to school soon and get out of our houses! I don’t know if I can survive another day of this! I’m done! This is killing me, I need some type of escape.
This poem is really good. I don’t think it was hard to understand this poem, it was very well written and you can feel the emotion and the things it is trying to explain and describe without exactly saying it. I have mixed emotions about it though. It’s weird but this poem made me sad, mad and also happy after reading a bit more about it and the back story. It made me sad because I think it’s just horrible that people felt like they had the right to beat, hurt, and hang others just because of the color of their skin. I also liked the poem because it helped some people understand that this way of treating others was terrible and needed to stop and they had to change things. I think this poem brings a really powerful message and I’m glad that we got to read it for this assignment.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Jem, Scout and Atticus are talking about what had happened the night at the jail and Atticus says, “‘ Mr. Cunningham’s basically a good man,’ he said, ‘he just has his blind spots along with the rest of us.’ Jem spoke. ‘Don’t call that a blind spot. He’da killed you last night when he first went there.'” Even after all that has happened Atticus still sees everyone in the town who has done things to him or said things to him as good people. If you take into consideration what years this book takes place in you will understand why he is so forgiving to them. Even though Mr.Cunningham was willing to hurt his friends to kill an innocent black man that night Atticus is still understanding and thinks of him as basically a good man.
When Scout is talking to Miss Maudie I think she is trying to help her understand that people are just different. When Miss Maudie say’s “sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of” a man like Atticus. She goes on to say “there are just some kind of men who–who’re so busy worrying about the next world they’ve never learned to live in this one.” From what I understood is that Someone who decides drink and drive could have a possibility of hurting someone compared to a man with a bible in hand. That man could be making others feel worst or like they wouldn’t be good enough for the next life because they believe that they are better then others. She’s trying to show that some people just have way’s to make others feel bad about themselves, so that they can feel like they have a little more control over there insecurities or things they just can’t do.
If I had lived 90 years ago I don’t know how I would have entertained myself. I would really miss my phone haha. I think that sometimes we really take for granted what we have. We have so much technology and so much knowledge now days that help us be better everyday and achieve more. If we had lived back then our lives would be completely different. Not only would our lives just be different but they were going through some of the worst things America has had to deal with. If we would have lived back then a lot of us would have missed out on privileges that we have now. We should honestly be kinda thankful that we get to live in this time period.k
The phrase that states all men are created equal in the Declaration of independence was over seen in the 1950. Men believed that they had the right to take ownership of other people. I think that when we fell apart some people started to think of themselves as the higher priority. People were very selfish and to make it seem better for everyone they made laws to benefit everyone but in reality it only made things better for the people that were already okay. I think that if our country would have thought about how this would also affect future generations they could have written different things on the declaration to help the whole country and not only certain few people.
I think that it’s good that Atticus is trying. He’s trying to set an example, even tho he knows he won’t win he still has that little bit of faith that he could do something. He may only be one person but he could still have an impact. If someone puts you down you have to get back up. When things get hard we need to keep trying because if you keep going at it you will succede it one day. So even tho Atticus knows that he’s not gonna win the case he knows that if he keeps going at it, this will make a change later on.
When Atticus is explaining to Scout about considering things from their point of view, he is trying to make her understand that not everyone has it as good as she does. You shouldn’t really judge someone without knowing what their really going through. Scout was judging Walter for eating his food in a weird way with lots of syrup on it but, Walter is used to it because he needs the calories that comes from it so he doesn’t starve. Atticus is also trying to help Scount understand that it’s also Miss. Carolina’s first day teaching and it’t hard on her too so she needs to look at things from her point of view.
