The Good Stuff

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Jem talks to Miss Maudie after the trial. “Who?” Jem’s voice rose. “Who in this town did one thing to help Tom Robinson, just who?” Miss Maudie goes on to say the people who helped. She says several different people from around the town, Heck Tate, Judge Taylor, and Tom Robinson’s friends. People around the town had done little things that were hard to spot, but if you were looking closely those people did a lot to help Atticus and Tom Robinson. Judge Taylor put Atticus in charge of the trial, giving Tom Robinson a better chance at winning the trial. Heck Tate tried to help Tom and mentioned to Atticus that he thought that Tom would be killed if he stayed in the jail overnight. All of Tom’s friends helped, after Reverend Sykes asked them for money they put in money to help Tom’s wife so that she could get along without him. The fact of the matter was that Jem only looked at the negative side of things, in life we do this a lot too. There is so much bad sometimes that we can’t see the good that is right in front of us, but if we focus on it instead of the bad we might just realize how much good we have in our lives.

Climbing Into Other People’s Skin

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus says this phrase. It means , try to see things from other people’s view, and understand how they are feeling. Scout does not like her teacher Miss Caroline, she treated her unfairly the first day, but Scout’s first day was her first day too. If Scout tries to understand, then her life could be a lot easier. She may not like what a person did, but at least she will be able to understand why they did it and sympathize them. People can be hard to understand sometimes, there is a lot that we don’t see. They could be having a hard family life, or something going on outside of where we see them. That’s why we need to be able to try to “climb into other people’s skin” and say nice things always. One mean phrase could be the thing that pushes someone the rest of the way over the edge. Or one nice phrase could make all the difference.

Empathy

Empathy is understanding what someone is going through and being able to comfort them, since you know what is going on. You need to be able to be understanding and not pushy or hard on them in the situation. You can’t have empathy unless you truly feel for them, just being able to understand what’s  going on isn’t enough. I remember one time when my friend didn’t seem like herself. She would get angry at us for the littlest things and then not talk to us for a week at a time, because she was still angry. I didn’t know why she was being that way and would get angry at her for getting angry at me. Finally one day she texted and apologized for how she was acting, and said that she was having some problems and was trying to figure some things out. I understood at that time what she meant and new why she was getting angry. I may not know exactly what she was going through, but I was able to have empathy for her because I know what its like to go through hard things in life, and not be able to explain it well. I think everyone needs to be able to have empathy because with out it we won’t ever know how to help people, and we might end up hurting their feelings without it.

2nd Semester Goals and Aspirations

Second semester just started today, and there are some things I need to improve. Last semester I worked on getting better at writing my papers, I think that by the end of second term I improved in being able to get it down quickly and efficiently. I wrote my papers without dragging them out for a long time and that made English better. I do have somethings I need to improve on though. I struggle with getting the blog writes done in the ten minutes that are given and so at the end of the term I have to go through, finish writing, add a picture, and comment on other peoples blogs. It would take a while and is very tedious. This semester I think that I can work on fixing that though, I can write faster so I have more time to add a picture and comment on other people’s things, or I could go online at home and do it the day we got it so that it doesn’t build up.

Design Thinking

The design thinking process is used to improve programs, items, and the ways we do things. It helps with reviews and how popular things are. They improve business and help people to be happier with what they have. Recently in English we have been talking about the design thinking process. I think the reason we are using it in there is because through out life we will need to use it so much. It will help with entrepreneurship and with sustaining a good job. All jobs use this process, whether you are working at taco bell or your making programs for people to use. There is always room to improve what you’ve got, you just have to work for it. You need to realize a flaw, or something that can be done better, think about what would work best for fixing it-with your audience in mind- and then fix it. That’s the design thinking process.

The Knife of Never Letting Go

This is one of the books that was on Mr. Green’s new Library Thing page. This book and The Ask and the Answer Book  both caught my attention. I wanted to know what this book was about so I looked it up. The book is about how a boy lives in a village with a bunch of men. All the girls were killed off from a germ called the noise germ. The main character notices that his town is hiding something, and he ends up having to leave the town because of it, but while he is outside of his town he meets a girl. Somehow they are still alive, so the main character sets out to find out why she is living. The reason I was interested in this book was because of the front page and the title. It sounded really interesting so I chose to write about this book.

Promoting Change

The way we promote change varies, whether its voting, protesting, or talking to someone about your opinion. We all have a job to do when it comes to promoting change, it is our responsibility. We all have to make sure that we are doing something to promote change. We need to be coming up with new things, bringing old things back, and using our voices to help others make good choices. People give the government so much power because we won’t speak up.  People let others tell them what to do because they are scared speak up. We need to promote change and make sure we are doing what we believe in. Our country is free, and we need to make sure we are using that to share our opinions and promote change. We can help our society so much when we promote change. And who knows, maybe one day if you promote change then you will be the one making laws, or saving people, or doing something great.

The Sticky Issue of Equality

Equality means that everyone is treated equal, no matter where they are from, or what economical problems they are having. The Declaration of Independence reads, “…all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…,” but how well do we actually do this? Some people might complain that we don’t, or that life is unfair because they were born to a family with economic problems. The truth is though, to have equality we don’t treat everyone the same. Sure everyone should be treated kindly, but people have different talents, different strengths, and different weaknesses. If we gave everyone the same math test, some would do great, some would do okay, and some would totally bomb it. That’s why we have different levels of classes for people and if they want/need it they can also have a tutor. If we made everybody play a sport of an instrument some could do really good and others might not excel at it. To have a good society we need people with different talents and different strengths so that we can all have different jobs.

How I Did During First Term

First term is all done, and has been done for a while, but thinking back I think that I did pretty good during first term. I got all of my stuff turned in, and I tried hard on my writing. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, but it still was hard. I think that English is the hardest out of all of my classes. It is hard for me to focus when I’m writing and takes me a while to figure out what I want to say. The biggest achievements that I had in English is my paper that I had to write. Even though it took me a while I think that it ended up pretty good. Some goals I have for the rest of the year are to not procrastinate my English homework, try to go faster, and try really hard to focus better. Hopefully by the end of the year I will achieve my goals.

How I Define Equality

In the Declaration of Independence it says that “all men are created equal,” but what does that mean people? To me I think that it means that no matter if you are a man or a woman, or if you are of a different race, the rights are still the same for you. Equality doesn’t mean that everyone is exactly the same like in the short story “Harrison Bergeron.” Everyone is different, they all have different talents, they all look different, they all have a different take on life. The Declaration of Independence was written for the people of this country to have freedom and for the people to live happy lives. We all should be treated with kindness and get the same respect as our piers do. We aren’t held back from having different hair, or if we suck at dancing. Equality is that we all are given the same rights, and are treated with the same respect.
