An Authority on Courage and Integrity

Someone I know and play volleyball with has a lot of courage and integrity and always tries to do the right thing.

I have lots of courage and integrity. I always try to do the right thing even though it may be hard. I am one of the kindest people you will meet. If someone didn’t know what courage or integrity meant, and they were faced with a hard decision, I would say to them- even though you are scared to do it and are confused on what decision is the right decision, just go with your gut and stick to what you believe in. Have courage and integrity. I stick to what I believe in and always try to do the right thing.

Blind Spots

“‘Mr. Cunningham’s basically a good man,’ he said, ‘he just has his blind spots along with the rest of us.'” says Atticus. Mr. Cunningham showed up to murder Tom Robinson, and I don’t think that that is just a “blind spot”/a silly, little mistake.  Some people make dumb mistakes and I think that it is fair to call those blind spots. But Cunningham showed up to murder Tom.

It is really hard to pick a side because he may have had a good reason, but an excuse for showing up to commit murder, you would have to have a really good reason for why you would do that. Atticus says that Mr. Cunningham is “basically a good man”.  Atticus is a very wise person and it would be smart to learn from him and listen to what he says, but I still think that showing up to murder someone isn’t a blind spot, it’s something serious-not a silly mistake that most people make.

What went wrong with the sub

What went wrong with the sub. Well a lot of things were happening, but it looked like she didn’t even care what was going on. Many people were bad because she let them be bad.  She was laughing the whole time and said that a small group of people could listen to music as long as it was clean so I’m really confused why she gave a really bad report.

My role in all of this was literally nothing. I sat in the back corner,  read my book and did my work. I think what could have been done differently was maybe we could have given her a little more respect and the people who were being loud should have just listened the first time that she asked them to be quiet.

Overall, I’m still really confused why she gave a bad report because she was laughing the whole time that some of the class was talking and being disrespectful. She let them talk to their neighbors and listen to music and was laughing about it and thought it was funny, so I’m still really confused.

Real Courage

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” Atticus says this to Jem in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. He really puts courage into a new perspective. I really like this definition of courage because it is really deep and it makes sense too. Real courage is not wanting to do something, but doing it anyways even though you will lose or it might be scary. Atticus does this with Tom Robinson. He knows he will lose in court, but he helps him because no one else will. That is real courage.

I think that Atticus is really wise to try and defend Tom Robinson. It’s integrity. He knows it’s right so he does it even though he knows they are going to lose. He is sacrificing a lot and I think he does it because it is the right think to do. Also because no one else has the bravery and the courage to help Tom Robinson.

This tells us that Atticus is a very wise, loving, and courageous man. He puts his children through this because he probably thinks that they are tough enough to take insults from many people. People are just being rude and mean and words can’t hurt his children, so that is maybe why he thinks he can put his children through this. Atticus is a very brave man helping  Tom Robinson.

Climbing into another person’s skin

“First of all,” he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kind of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view–”
“Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

What Atticus told Scout is very important in many ways. I think that this means you can’t decide to mean or rude or stereotype someone if you don’t know what they are going through. They could be going through a lot of challenging things, and you won’t ever get along with someone if you don’t (as Atticus Finch says) climb into another person’s skin and walk around in it. You just have to look at things from a different point of view before you come to conclusions about that person.

Beliefs and Actions

Recently we have learned about Belief Windows, which are a mental construct of the brain that make every person see the world differently.  Not necessarily see with your eyes, but with your mind as well. Everyone has accepted things correct, and have made assumptions, and more that could all be very incorrect. These beliefs, assumptions, (etc) can also have an impact on a persons actions.

This idea is really interesting to me and I think that my belief window definitely comes into play when I am faced with a decision I have to make. I think that it shapes anyone’s actions because every person believes things differently.

I think that is important to know what we believe, because we could learn that we are totally wrong. It is also important to know that there are other beliefs that other people have, and we do not have the right to judge based upon those beliefs.

In my opinion, I think that beliefs are formed based upon what we understand about was we saw from a scenario. Everyone sees everything differently, so many people will make decisions different than others, because that is what they saw.

The end is halfway upon us

I am really proud of the work that I have done this term. I have been working really hard in everything I do, including the sports that I play. Something that I could do to improve is making sure I know when things are due and the date of a test so I can prepare for it.

Another thing that has been going really well this term is my independent reading. I try to read a lot but I am usually so busy at home. But at school my reading is going fine. I wish I had finished more books because I only finished one. I think that reading independently every day will definitely affect my future as  a critical thinker and a communicator.

The goals that I remember that I set for school is reading about 10-15 minutes every day. I achieve that goals on B-days in English but not on my own. I think that I could do better and pick more fun and interesting books to read.  I will work harder to achieve this goal.

Literature Review

This story is about a newly wedded couple that crash land into the Amazon Rain forest. The story was really repetitive and kept using the same words over and over again. The author was really creative and used good figurative language. The writing was clean and you can understand it. The author could have been less repetitive and made sure that she avoided run on sentences. The author moves that were made were really good and I could tell that the mood was mysterious and scary. For this story I will give it about an 8. This story was really good.

1% gain

I want to start doing 1% gains.  These little gains build up on each other to create a great, successful result.  For my 1% gain I want to drink at least 2 water bottles every day and eat more vegetables and fruit.  I am playing 2 sports right now (volleyball and basketball)  and I go from one to the other. I work really hard in both of them, and eating well and drinking a lot of water will help me perform better. Eating healthy and staying hydrated is super important to me and I really want to perform well. Eating well and drinking 2 water bottles every day will be my 1% gain.
