Sri Lanka is a beautiful tropical Island right off the southern tip of India, which is home to 21.2 million people. The majority of people who live in Sri Lanka live in one of it’s capital city, Colombo. The population of Colombo is 648,034 people. Sri Lanka has 2 capital cities, the other being Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte. The second most populated city is Mount Lavina. Mount Lavina is a suburban area with beautiful, golden beaches. The major languages spoken there are Sinhala, Tamil, and English. The main religions are Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Sri Lanka has one of the lowest extreme poverty rates. 4% of people live in poverty. Their primary form of agriculture is rice but they also tea, and other fruits and vegetables. Sri Lanka gained its independence in 1948, previously being ruled by Portuguese and Dutch influences. For over 25 years Sri Lanka was in a Civil War, and had lots of violence, luckily that ended in may 2009.
